Leather Belt Width Guide
Compare KERVELAN leather belts in 28 mm, 30 mm and 33 mm. Learn how strap width, trouser loops and buckle shape affect proportion.
The short answer
Choose 28 mm for a slim, understated line; 30 mm for everyday balance; or 33 mm for a stronger waistline, particularly with denim. The right width also needs to fit the belt loops on your trousers.
| Strap width | Character | KERVELAN styles | Often paired with |
|---|---|---|---|
| 28 mm | Slim and refined | Arden / Maren | Tailoring, cleaner denim |
| 30 mm | Balanced | Mercer | Chinos, everyday trousers |
| 33 mm | More substantial | Rowan | Denim, relaxed tailoring |
These are styling starting points, not rules. The same width can feel different depending on its buckle, finish and the clothes around it.
First, check your belt loops
Measure the inside height of the narrowest belt loop on the trousers you actually wear. The strap should pass through without forcing or bunching. Once you know it fits, choose the proportion you like rather than trying to fill every millimeter of the loop.
28 mm — quiet definition
The Arden and The Maren have slim, 28 mm top-grain leather straps and oval copper buckles. Their washed or antiqued finishes create different effects, even at the same width.
Choose 28 mm for narrow loops, refined trousers or denim outfits where you prefer the belt to remain subtle. Compare both in Slim Belts.
30 mm — an everyday balance
The Mercer has a 30 mm top-grain strap and a round brass single-prong buckle. It carries a little more presence than a 28 mm belt without dominating most everyday outfits.
This width works well when you move between denim, chinos and straight trousers and want one versatile proportion.
33 mm — a stronger line
The Rowan has a 33 mm top-grain leather strap, distressed and washed finish, and a stainless-steel buckle. It is the broadest style in the current KERVELAN range.
Its more substantial profile is a natural starting point for straight or relaxed denim, chinos and less formal tailoring. It is not intended to be a heavy workwear-width belt.
What about jeans?
Jeans often have wider loops and sturdier fabric, which can support a more visible belt. Within KERVELAN, pick 28 mm for a deliberate slim contrast, 30 mm for balance, or 33 mm when you want the belt to show more clearly.

What about chinos and tailored trousers?
Start with the loop opening and the weight of the fabric. A 28 mm strap usually gives the cleanest line; 30 mm adds a little structure; 33 mm makes a more intentional statement with looser or more casual trousers.
Also consider the buckle. Shape and metal finish can change how bold two similarly sized straps look.
Width is not belt size
Width is the height of the leather strap, measured across its long edges. Thickness is the depth of the leather. Belt size is the fit measurement: KERVELAN standard pin-buckle belts use the distance from the buckle pin to the center hole.
If you need to choose a length rather than a width, use the Belt Size Guide or the short measurement walkthrough. For products and available sizes, shop all belts.
